Best in Blog #5: Tasting Notes and Whisky News on the Web
When I first started writing these blogger-roundups, most whisky bloggers were posting once a week at most. I dont’ know if it’s Feis Ile, or just the dawn of spring, but whisky bloggers are on a bender lately – as is the whisky industry. Here’s the latest (magnum-sized) collection of Tasting Notes from the blogs we read, and whisky news on the web:
Tasting Notes:
- Whisky Notes revisits the Ardbeg 10 and comes away with a more favorable impression than in previous tastings. For my money, he is still undervaluing this excellent dram. He also tries a dram of a Rare Malts St. Magdalene 1970 23 year.
- Whisky Fun tastes two special edition Laphroaigs only available at the Feis Ile Festival, as well as special editions from Lagavulin, Caol Ila and Bruichladdich.
- Whisky for Everyone tastes the Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist, as well as a Braeval 10 year from Old Malt Cask.
- Still at Feis Ile, Cask Strength takes us through five bottlings of Ardbeg, including the new Corryvreckan, and five bottlings of Laphroaig.
- Scotch Hobbyist tries a miniature bottle of Bruichladdich 15 year and finds it different than the full-sized bottlings.
The latest in whisky news:
- The Herald interviews Alistair Walker, 34, whose family owns the BenRiach and GlenDronach distilleries. An interesting look into the business of distillation.
- Malt Advocate reports that the first bottle of Kilchoman auctioned for £5000. You can view video of the auction here.
- Move over Japan, India may be the next foreign player in the world of single malt whisky. Global Post reports on the growth of Amrut Distilleries and their work to craft a world-class single malt.
- Jura is set to launch a limited edition bottling (1,300) of a new expression: Jura Paps
- All week long malt enthusiasts have been trecking to Islay for the annual Feis Ile Festival. Most all the major whisky blogger are there and, rather than duplicate efforts, I’ll point you to Scotch Hobbyist’s excellent roundup of all their postings on the festivities.
- Whisky for Everyone reports that the Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist is slated for retirement. It will be replaced by a much younger, cask-strength dram called Corryvreckan.
- Bruichladdich has been nominated for the Daily Record Scottish Green Awards as the most organic, transparent and environmentally distilleries in Scotland.
- According to Wine & Spirits Daily, the drinks business is not as recession proof as once thought. Consumers are reigning in their spending/drinking habits because of the recession. Businesses are looking to younger drinkers (Millennials) to drive the uptick in business once the economy is back on track. Sounds like a great time to introduce young people to single malt whiskies.
- Whisky Reviews gives us an inside look at the newly opened Glengyle distillery:
