Best in Blog #4: Tasting Notes and Whisky News on the Web
The latest in whisky news:
- Balvenie is holding a contest. Give them your email and answer a simple question and you could win a bottle of The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old, The Balvenie Signature 12 Year Old or The Balvenie Single Barrel 15 Year Old.
- Glenfiddich launched an online community – Glenfiddich Explorers. To be perfectly honest, it’s not much of a community – really just a lot of brochure-ware.
- Campbeltown has a new distillery – Glengyle. Get the details on this new cousin of Springbank and Glen Scotia at Whisky Stuff.
- The Scotch Whisky Association is taking steps to prevent Indian single malt whiskies from calling themselves “scotch” whisky.
- Wine and Spirits Daily reports that Americans prefer beer and domestic wine to other forms of alcohol. Only 13% report drinking scotch. We can do better.
- Over at John Hansell’s Malt Advocate blog, discussion continues about the acceptability of serving scotch on the rocks. Lots of good comments.
And the best tasting notes on the web:
- Scotch Hobbyist gets his hands on some Port Askaig 17 year, as well as some Rosebank 17. I’ve got some of that myself this week – look for notes in a few days.
- Whisky for Everyone reviews St. Magdalene 1982 ‘Berry’s Own Selection’. Readers will note that, like Rosebank, St. Magdalene is a now-closed lowland distillery.
- Whisky Fun reports on three rare Springbanks.
- Whisky Notes opens up a bottle of the Robur Reserve from The Glenrothes. This one is only availalbe in Duty Free, look for it next time you travel.

Thanks for the mention! I’m looking forward to your comments on the Rosebank 17. I revisited the Rosebank and ended up adding some additional notes to my post.
I’m very intrigued by that St. Magdalene 1982 now as well.
Jeff
yeah I’ve really been looking forward to it. I’ve been slow to try lowland scotches, vaguely remembering not liking them during an “into to scotch” tasting flight from all 5 regions.
But a couple months ago I tried a Glenkinchie at a bar and really enjoyed it. This should be good – I’ve heard a lot of buzz about Rosebank.
