Best in Blog #67: More on Malt Advocate Awards and Shackleton’s Whisky (and Brandy!)
The Malt Advocate Whiskey Awards continue. Since our last Best in Blog, Crown Royal Cask #16 has won best Canadian Whisky of the year, and Parker’s Heritage Collection “Golden Anniversary” Bourbon won for American Whiskey of the year. Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve (2009) wins Irish Whiskey of the year.
And now to continue our regular programming:
Tasting Notes from Blogs We Trust:
- Whisky for Everyone says the new Black Bull 40 year old blend is an excellent value.
- Whisky Fun gives outstanding scores to three official (but not core) expressions of Highland Park.
- Whisky Notes tries Goldly’s 1994 Limousin Cask, a single malt from a Belgian craft distillery.
- He also tries Arran 1998 (bourbon cask 700), calling it solid with a sweet vanilla nose. Not complex, but drinkable.
- Scotch Hobbyist meets the manager of Bulleit Bourbon and does a tasting.
Whisk(e)y News on the Web:
- Whiskey Apostle explains, in laymens’ terms, why the small batch/craft/new whisky you want will never be carried in your local store.
- Berry Brothers & Rudd have sold Cutty Sark to the Edrington Group in exchange for The Glenrothes.
- BenRiach launched a new website. Go check it out.
- Another Twitterview! This time Whisky Host Tweets with the General Manager for Amrut.
- The Classic Malts Selection (read: Diageo) has put together a pretty cool iPhone application to help you find good whisky – be it by region, by food pairing, or randomly. It’s called Malt Matcher. It’s got a great interface, and it’s FREE! Only problem is that it will only tell you about whiskies owned by Diageo. Bummer.
- Douglas Laing is rolling out some new Provenance bottlings.
- A. Dewar Rattray is also releasing new bottlings this month.
- Turns out there were three cases of whisky in Shackleton’s Antarctic hut, along with two cases of brandy. Some bottles were broken. No word yet on how many were intact.
- Whisky for Everyone guest blogs on Whisky Host, taking a turn at deconstructing an obscure tasting note. Their choice – screeching tyres. They blog about – er – guest blogging back on their own blog.
- Michter’s Distillery in Pennsylvania will “celebrate” the 20th anniversary of its closing by offering tours to the public on Valentine’s Day.
