Best in Blog #52: Happy Repeal Day!
For those of you in the US, today is Repeal Day – the 76th anniversary of the end of prohibition. I assume you’ll all be having a drink today – either in the comforts of your own home or out at one of many celebrations that your local bar is sure to be holding. I’ll be celebrating my own Repeal Day at a few bars here in Brooklyn.
You’ll notice that today’s Best in Blog has three sections. Apparently y’all decided to go and drink a ton of bourbon over the last week, enough that I thought this time around it justified it’s own category.
Single Malt Tasting Notes From Bloggers We Trust:
- Ardbeg fans will love this – Whisky Host has a head-to-head comparison of the Corryvreckan Committee Bottling and the Official Bottling that was recently released.
- He also does a head-to-head of Dalmore Cigar Malt and Dalmore Gran Reserva.
- The (lucky) guys at Cask Strength have a sneak peak of the next releases in Diageo’s Manager’s Choice Series – Glen Spey 13, Inchgower 15, Talisker 15 (sherry!). In their estimation, the Talisker is the best bottle of the entire series thus far. Too bad I’ll probably never be able to drink it here in the states.
- Continuing on the “whiskies I’ll never drink” kick, here’s John Hansell’s review of a Glengoyne 40. Let me also use this as an opportunity to promote once again an excellent editorial John wrote last week on (in part) pricing and rare/exclusive trends in the whisky biz.
- Falling back down to the price range of mere mortals, Whisky For Everyone reviews the “underrated” Glen Grant 10, the Smokehead 18, which is rumored to be an IB or Ardbeg 18, and Kavalan, a Taiwanese single malt.
- Not to be outdone, Whisky Notes reviews “Wait La Mazurka,” a Daily Dram version of the Karuizawa 31 year old. Ruben also looks at the Jura Prophecy.
- Drink Hacker reviews the Masters of Malt independent bottling series: M’Orkney 11, Arran 12, Tamnavulin 16, Tomatin 19, Bowmore 26.
- My friend Matt runs a cocktail blog down in D.C. – A Jigger of Blog. He’s finally starting to get into scotch whisky, and here’s his first set of tasting notes: Glenlivet Nadurra Triumph.
- Whisky Intelligence reviews a 12 year old Imperial, Springbank 10 from The Alchemist, and an Isle of Arran 10.
Bourbon Notes From Bloggers We Trust:
- Whisky for Everyone tries Bulleit Bourbon.
- Whisky Apostle tries Maker’s Mark Straight Kentucky Bourbon.
- Drink Hacker reviews Black Maple Hill Bourbon (which I’ve had and give a thumbs up).
- Whisky Notes reviews Woodford Reserve.
Whisk(e)y News on the Web:
- Nonjatta is bragging that Japanese whiskies are starting to get more respect than some traditional single malt scotches.
- Here’s a video on how to pair whisky with food.
- Highland Park is running a contest to win a bottle of their new 1968 vintage.
- Here’s an interesting new series – Whisy Host is starting a series of blog posts called “Say What?!” – about some of the stranger (but common) tasting notes you occasionally read.
- Did you ever think to yourself – I really need a whisky bottle that lights up and “dances” to my music? Well now you can have it.
- The whisky industry is booming, thanks to growing markets in China and India (hat tip to John Hansell on this one).
